ORTHOPAEDIC PHYSICAL THERAPY RESIDENCY
The LSU Health Shreveport Orthopaedic Residency Program began in 2007 with an emphasis on preparing its graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in managing patients with orthopaedic conditions.
The program is built on the belief that mentoring the next generation of physical therapists through a year of specialized clinical skill development will benefit the profession, but more importantly, the people our profession serves.
Our program offers residents the best of both academic and clinical environments. This combined setting has proven highly effective, allowing residents to gain unique experiences in an academic-clinical atmosphere. These include attending conferences, participating in rounds, and observing surgeries at a Level I Trauma Center. Moreover, residents have the same access and privileges as faculty members within the DPT program, since it is located within the same building as the primary practice location of the residency. The primary practice location for our residents is the LSUHS School of Allied Health Faculty Practice Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic on the ground floor of the School, where program mentors practice themselves, and are available throughout the day.
In 2024, the program was granted a full 10-year re-accreditation by the ABPTRFE. The program has consistently met and exceeded the high standards set by ABPTRFE to achieve this distinction. Recent developments in the program include providing residents with the opportunity to serve as clinical instructors in the DPT program, as well as assisting with didactic education in the DPT Orthopedic curriculum. Additionally, our program offers comprehensive instructional content beyond the clinical setting. This includes advanced anatomy and biomechanics, a review of the latest evidence-based physical therapy practices, advanced manual therapy, teaching and learning strategies, and functional rehabilitation techniques.

Our Mission

In accordance with the new vision of APTA to, “Transform society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience,”1 we aim to influence not only our residents, but our profession and community. Through offering a quality, integrated, patient-centered post-doctoral training program, we aim to have a lasting impact on our environment by changing the culture of healthcare wherever our program is involved. This starts by ensuring quality preparation for all our faculty and residents, and ensuring the effects are observed over time.
